Guest Post: DIY Sunscreen: A Safe, Natural Alternative

Hey Everyone!

Today we have a guest post by Michelle Pino. Its different from the usual- but I found it so interesting and informative and I think you guys will to! Its also perfect for this time of year.
"This summer, I’ve had a chance to spend quite a bit of time outdoors. I love to swim and spend time at water parks, pools and lakes. However all that time in the sun can result in some pretty nasty burns if you’re not careful. Sunscreens work by blocking the sun with either chemical or natural sun filters. Among chemical sunscreens sold in the U.S., 80 percent contain oxybenzone. This potentially harmful chemical can be absorbed through the skin. For many people, it can cause allergic reactions, and it may also disrupt natural hormones.

Fortunately, there is also good news. I also learned that there are several common oils that supply SPF naturally. Some of these include red raspberry seed oil (SPF up to 50), carrot seed oil (SPF up to 40), soybean oil (SPF 10), macadamia nut oil (SPF 6). Additionally, there are several moisturizing oils that contain an SPF of below 10 but are an excellent addition to natural sunscreens because of their fragrant or water-resistant properties.

The experts from Skana spa of the New York resort Turning Stone sent us this recipe for a totally chemical free sunscreen that can be made right in the comfort of your own home.
What You Need
1 ounce red raspberry seed oil
1 ounce coconut oil
1 ounce beeswax (provides water-resistance)
5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Place the ingredients in a glass bowl or in the top of a double boiler. Set this over a pan of boiling water and heat until ingredients have melted together. Cool and store in a cool, dry place. The mixture can be refrigerator for longer storage.

Since I spend a lot of time in and around the water, this recipe works particularly well because the beeswax adds a water-resistant property. As with all sunscreens, this concoction will need to be reapplied regularly. If you stay dry, you can reapply it every three to four hours, but when sweating or spending time in the water, be sure to reapply it at least every two hours to avoid burning. Basically, it works like those commercially marketed chemical sunscreens, but it’s much safer to use regularly."

Michelle Pino has contributed this recipe based on the knowledge she has learned while working at Skana, one of New York’s finest spas. When Michelle isn’t working you will find her baking, crafting, reading a magazine or catching up on her favorite TV shows. A big thank you to Michelle for her post- let me know if you give the recipe a go!

Hair Products Haul

Hey Everyone!

Instead of letting this become another post consisting of me moaning about how flat, straight and boring my hair is- lets dive straight in and I'll show you what hair products I've bought recently. Its weird because I usually do hauls on YouTube so I'm a bit rusty doing blog post hauls!

I'm not usually one for hair products- but after last weeks bbloggers chat, I had a list the length of my arm of things to try. Be warned- join that conversation at your purses risk!
I think I must of had about half a dozen replies to my 'Which is the best hairspray' query recommending Elnette- I couldn't not get it. It was just over £6 but haircare is currently on buy one get one half price in Boots- so it didn't work out so bad. So far I have only used this once so haven't entirely got to grips with it. Let me know if you'd like to see a full review of any of these.

I've wanted a Salt Spray for a very long time- and the haircare offer meant it was a good time to purchase. Weirdly, I couldn't remember a single Salt Spray recommendation- so I went for one that 'looked' good and was a decent price. This worked out about £3 I think.

Finally, after much umming and arring over buying the Lush dry shampoo (which smells amazing but realistically its probably just Talc + something with a nice scent) I went for the budget option of baby powder. I'm usually use Batiste but I'm not a fan of the smell, and a few bloggers mentioned that they thought  this was just as good. I think it was around 84p so its not a big deal if it isn't great.

Have you tried any of these products?

Birthday Snaps

Hey Everyone!

I mentioned in my last post that it was my birthday a few weeks ago so I thought I'd share a few photos I took. I'm always very interested to see posts along these lines- so hopefully no one will think I'm bragging or anything- this is just for the nosy people like me who are interested in some of the things I got.

I was so lucky to receive this amazing parcel from the lovely Melanie filled with lots of Canadian bits and bobs (including Bath and Body Works products!). It arrived in rather weirdly good timing: just as I was opening my other presents! I was also given the Soap & Glory Birthday Box (very appropriate) and the cutest little vintage poem. Finally,  I love this Shamballa bracelet- I've wanted one for ages.

I'm Off!

Hey Everyone!

Just a quick note to say I'm off to Africa today! I'll be back on the 25th, and I've scheduled a few posts between now and then. I just wanted to let you know that it'll probably be a bit quieter over the next two weeks- but I'll be back into routine when I'm home.

And if you have any requests of posts you'd like to see be sure to let me know!

For now I'll leave you with a few random photos I've taken recently.
This is my most recent DIY!
I got this at a car boot sale for £1. Its not a great read, but I thought the cover was really nice!
I sorted my jewellery box yay!

Have a good two weeks!

The (Slightly Belated) Sunday Post #11

Hey Everyone!

Firstly, a big hello to my new followers. I'm hoping that people will start to use GFC again after the migration to Bloglovin'- I just don't like it as much. I feel like I'm always saying this, but apologies for the lack of posts of late. I haven't written an 'news' kind of post in a while- so I thought I'd give you a quick run down of what has been going on.

My Life
Probably the most exciting thing that happened recently was my birthday. I had a cute little family celebration, and was lucky enough to receive some lovely gifts. Other than that, I have just been preparing for my trip to Africa (I'm leaving tomorrow!) and watching wayy too much tv. Oh talking of TV- how great was the Wimbledon final?
I'm not sure if I've already mentioned this, but I am taking a little break from Youtube. I may go back to it in the future, but for now I want to focus on blogging. I'm going to schedule a few posts for when I'm away then get into some sort of posting routine when I'm back.
Current Favourite
I have been in love with The Carrie Diaries over the past week! I watched the whole season in a few days. The fashion, characters, setting- everything is amazing! Do any of you like it?

How has your week been?
