The Perfect Summer Day Out #AD

When I finished my second year of university in May I had the very grand yet vague idea of 'actually doing stuff' with my summer instead of lapsing into the all-too-familiar couch potato life. Although I have indulged in a fair amount of my favourite hobby (lying down and watching TV) I have realised that making the most of summer is most easily done by doing all the little things that you always mean to do but never have the time. Things that are both realistic and fulfilling. I find that if you record each little thing you do, you can look back and see that it adds up to one successful, productive summer. Things on my list this year included getting back into blogging, decluttering my bedroom, getting a new job and making time for fun days out with friends and family. 

While some may consider a day of sunbathing or visiting a theme park the ultimate summer day out, I'm not a fan of sizzling my skin in the sun (not that we get a great deal in Glasgow) or scary rollercoasters (I threw up the last time I went on one). Instead, sometimes the most simple kind of day out can be the most enjoyable. I think one of the most classic and fun summer days out is going for a picnic. You can adapt it to your budget, your location and the time you have available. If you are lucky enough to live in the country or by the sea, I imagine you have an endless selection of scenic picnic locations to choose from. But even if you live in the city like me, you can take a picnic basket filled with goodies to a park, on a train journey, or even to your back garden. Its a day out that everyone can enjoy- from little kids to grannies and grandpas. The most important thing about it is taking time out from your day to day routine to appreciate tasty food and good company. A picnic is also, lets face it, pretty instagram/ Pinterest worthy. Collective Haul

First off- apologies for the shoddy picture quality. This is what happens when you haven't blogged properly in months and good habits are forgotten (don't even get me started on the amount of new products I've forgotten to take pictures of before I've used them)!
I came across this picture on my phone and thought I'd give a little run down of what I bought on a recent (ish) shopping trip. The top, skirt and necklace were what I wore on my birthday night out and I absolutely love them. A-line skirts are an absolute favourite right now. I think they're a really good shape on me; so much so that I've since bought this  same skirt in khaki. It was actually my mum who pointed out this necklace in Primark after me going on about how much I needed statement necklaces (after watching so much Gossip Girl). Compared to the ones I had been looking at in H&M which were all well over £10, this was a bargain and its really pretty. I always fear that Primark jewellery will break within one wear but this necklace has held up well as I've now worn it a few times. 
I also picked up some holiday bits. You can't go wrong with the sunglasses in Primark for £1 or £2: I buy a few pairs each year; they're cute and it doesn't matter if they break. These sandals were only around £4 and I wore them every single night on holiday- well worth it. As for beauty things from Superdrug I bought nail polish remover as a means of preventing myself biting polish off, Vitamin E Superbalm for cuticles and lips and Eyelure 101's- my favourite going out lashes. 

Adventures in Brighton

This year for our family summer holiday we decided to stay in the UK and spend the week in Brighton. It was absolutely amazing! And what made it even better was that my cousin who lives in New Zealand who I haven't seen in years came too- yay! We stayed in the Queens Hotel which was really lovely. The building was quite old but our room was enormous and most importantly, they replaced the biscuits and mini toiletries everyday (my family and I would give Ross Geller a run for his money when it comes to hotel freebies). I laid out all my makeup and brushes on my bedside cabinet- it was so nice to look at and very insta-worthy but I wouldn't have it at home as it would be a nightmare to clean. The hotel also had a lovely breakfast buffet and bistro/bar where we had tasty cocktails.

Brighton honestly has so much to offer. I don't know if its just because so many bloggers and youtubers go on about it but my excitement for visiting was so real and it didn't disappoint at all. It was as hot as when I visited Lisbon last year too because of the heat wave. Brighton scores top points from me with regard to food, shops, friendliness and general photo-worthiness. My favourite place to eat was an Italian restaurant not far behind our hotel called Al Duomo which had delicious food and reasonable prices. The selection of restaurants was amazing so the fact we went to Al Duomo twice for dinner shows just how great it was. Other tasty treats worth noting were MooMoo's oreo milkshake on the pier and Angel Food Bakery's strawberry and cream cupcake.

I done a heck of a lot of shopping too. Is it just me or is there something very enabling about shopping on holiday? I have an 'oh I'm on holiday I'll just spend £19 on a makeup brush' kind of mindset. Lush, as per usual, didn't disappoint. The lovely woman who worked there was telling us about their current campaign #gayisok, part of which was to share a picture online with their new 'Love' soap which is gold, glittery and gorgeous. The lanes were so interesting though quite hard to navigate. There are so many cute little shops selling jewellery, crafts, antiques, homeware, books, clothes, makeup and more. I saw a shop called 'Ju-Ju' which interested me immensely because that's what my family call me. Also- Sammi from BeautyCrush walked by me! Its the weirdest experience seeing someone from YT in real life because you feel like you know them, but they don't know you. 

On Wednesday we also went through to Eastbourne and the 14 year old inside me was squealing because that's where 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' was filmed and I used to watch that film every night. We also went to the Toy and Model Museum close to the station- my family and I love that sort of thing.

Overall it was one of my favourite holidays ever- I can see what all the fuss is about now. If you get the chance to visit you should- its such an interesting place. I definitely want to go back.

New Hobbies to Try: Introduction

I've been thinking a lot lately about passions. I think its amazing how each person loves something, no matter how big or small. When someone is committed to something, it totally inspired the people around them. Of course, most of us will share common loves such as family, friends, food (teehee). What has most interested me lately though is different hobbies. With the remainder of my free time this summer before I start university, I've decided to try out lots of new hobbies which sound like something I might enjoy. Some on my list are things I already do, and some are completely new (sadly rhyming is not one- my talent is forever wasted). I've decided to do a little lifestyle mini series about how I get on with each. I'm excited to be challenged and maybe even find something I will become passionate about. 
Hobbies To Try/ Do More Of: ♥Learning French- I studied French a few years ago in school and loved it but I feel like I've forgotten it all now. I would really like to attempt to get back to where I was because its such a beautiful language and I'd love to be able to speak it; even a little. ♥Yoga- I done a couple of classes two summers ago and really enjoyed it. My mum, and countless others, rave about its benefits so its definitely worth a go. ♥Jewellery Making- I bought some supplies in Portugal to get started with this. I'm thinking bead based and maybe even learning to make loom bands. ♥Photography- I think this is one that every blogger wants to master. I dream of taking beautiful, professional pictures. Really though, if I manage to up the number of pictures I take, I'll consider it a job well done. ♥Reading- Again, I do this already but its something I definitely need to dedicate more time to. Its safe to say my summer reading list has kind of went out the window. Book number 3 of 40 for life. ♥Collecting- I do this already but I wanted to have a think about what collections I actually have and how to put them to best use. ♥Colouring Pages- When I first read online that this constituted a hobby I was a bit bewildered but it seems simple enough so I'll give it a go. ♥Journalling- I'm a total sporadic journal keeper. I started a journal about 2 years ago and I've made about 4 entries. ♥Scrapbooking- I feel like I'd need quite a few supplies for this so I'll raid my craft box and if I have no luck I'll maybe look into online scrapbooking. ♥Planning meaningful gifts- I'm not sure if this counts as a hobby but I'm the worst for leaving present buying to the last minute and I think planning ahead would be a lot wiser. ♥Running- Yeah, we'll see how this goes. ♥Blogging- Of course, I already do this but I thought I'd include it as its something I already love and want to do even more of. ♥Challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone in 5 ways- I think this is a really interesting one but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.  ♥Origami- Last year I made a bracelet out of Starburst wrappers and I've been pinning a lot of origami ideas on Pinterest. Watch this space. ♥Money Management- Most would count this as a chore rather than a hobby but I included it on my list as its something I really should be focusing on. ♥Be a tourist (in my own city)- Being on holiday and looking for places of interest combined with all the hype surrounding the Commonwealth made me think that I hardly ever visit the sights my city has to offer. I think it would be a fun way to spend time and if I take my camera I'd be trying two hobbies at once.
I've not yet decided how I will time each post letting you know how I'm getting on. I might post one a week or just update whenever I try one.

Lisbon Photo Diary

Last week was spent in with my family in Lisbon, Portugal: enjoying the sun, shopping and generally being a tourist. Its a stunning city and thankfully quite straight forward to navigate. I love the city and beach combination as I get bored just sitting around all day and like to pretend I'm cultured. 

I've decided to restart the little series I used to do of fortnightly picture diaries. Not only are they really interesting posts to look back on but they're easy to read (or skim) and I enjoy looking at other people's posts like this to see what they've been up to.

Current Beauty Favourites

I've been absolutely loving each of these products over the last little while and thought I'd let you know exactly why. I am thinking of doing a non-beauty favourites too- let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see in that. 

Makeup

S&G Archery in Brownie Points- This has made the long time impossible task of filling in my brows so straight forward. Its really defining and just the right shade. 

No7 Stay Precise Liquid Liner- I had a bit of a panic in the last few week because I had run out and couldn't find it in any Boots. After being reassured it hadn't been discontinued, I managed to find it well stocked in the one Boots I hadn't tried (phew). Anyway, this hands down beats any other liquid eyeliner I've ever tried, including L'Oreal Super Liner.

Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara- After getting a sample of this in a magazine I had to buy the full size because it is amazing. This has quickly become my HG mascara. It ticks all the boxes: length, volume, no clumps, and, unlike a lot of others, its not a pain to remove. 

MUA Lipstick in Shade 9- This has been a favourite of mine for years. It is non-drying, the perfect everyday colour and at only £1: it is an absolute steal.

MAC Lipstick in Girl About Town- Since receiving this as a birthday present last year, I wore this only from time to time because it was such a bold colour. I've been wearing it a lot on nights out lately though and the lasting power is absolutely amazing. Its such a good quality product and is really easy to apply.

Nails

Tanya Burr Nail Polish in Little Duck- I've been resisting Tanya Burrs collection since it hit shelves but I was delighted to receive 3 of her polishes for my birthday. I absolutely love mint nail polish but own none (surprising despite the size of my collection) and this is the first I used of the three. The colour payoff is excellent and it lasts a good few days without chipping.

Fragrance

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh- I'm a huge fan of Marc Jacobs perfume. I'm thinking of treating myself to another at duty free on the way to Portugal actually. Each one of the scents are fresh and sweet and beautiful. I reserve this for special occasions because its so expensive.

Body

Soap & Glory The Breakfast Scrub- The Breakfast Scrub is the most delicious smelling product ever- its like syrup/ pancakes/ sticky toffee pudding. It also leaves my skin super soft.

Hair

Batiste Dry Shampoo- When roots are looking a little greasy, Bastise dry shampoo is definitely a life saver. I had been using the 'blush' scent which comes in the pink bottle but it has that tell tale dry shampoo musty smell which I'm not a fan of. I picked up the 'fresh' scent as a little experiment to see if it would be any better and I was really pleased: thankfully it doesn't have the dry shampoo smell rather a fresher, perfumed one. The XXL Volume is more like a sticky, hairspray dry shampoo. It is brilliant for bulking up hair although the white colour is a little more difficult to work into the roots. 

Matalan Beach Buys

Hey Everyone!
For me, when 'high street shops' are mentioned, I automatically think of around 5 well known, regularly hauled and hyped names. Topshop for those treat purchases, Primark for affordable basics and the odd treasure find, and so on. In all honesty, until a few weeks ago, if Matalan was mentioned, I would automatically think of clothes for older ladies and kids. How wrong I was. I popped in out of interest and was very pleasantly surprised. 

On my first trip I bought the royal blue bottom mismatched bikini. I like that the top and bottoms are sold separately as I am often a different size on top than on bottom and sometimes I like to switch up patterns. I also went in after work a couple of days ago for a quick look about in the hope they might have a few beach essentials. Their summer sale is now on and its absolutely brilliant. For £15 I got the aztec bandeau bikini top, tortoise bottoms, a beach towel and the beach bag! Matalan is definitely the place for last minute holiday bargains. I would absolutely recommend popping in- their range completely surpassed my expectations.

Summer 2014 Primark Haul

Hey Everyone!
When I initially set out to do this post, it was going to be a collective haul but in the process of picture taking I realised that I've bought enough from Primark over the past few weeks to justify a whole post of its own. Primark hauls (both videos and blog posts) are probably my favourites as it gives you a chance to see whats in store. 
I've been buying mainly for my holidays to Portugal and Greece (which are both really soon woo!). I try not to spend too much on summer clothes because I don't get a whole lot of wear out of them as the Scottish weather is so unpredictable (though for once this year it has been pretty decent). I've also found myself going around Primark picking up random bits and bobs and thinking 'I'll find somewhere to wear that!'.

My most recent purchases are the pink playsuit (£14), printed trousers (£11) and foil tee (£8). I love the playsuit and trousers- they're both surprisingly comfortable and they don't look like they're from Primark at all (although I have a feeling that the trousers will be seen on everyone and their granny in the next few weeks). I was, and still am, a little uncertain about the foil top as something about it reminds me of wrapping paper. 
I've never noticed in previous years but this summer Primark's range of swimwear is fab. I personally don't see the point in spending over £30 on a bikini in Topshop (although they are gorgeous) if you're just going to wear it a couple of times when you can get one for just over £10 in Primark. I can't remember exact prices for the rest of my loot because its been a while since I bought it but I think the sunglasses were all between £2 and £3. The cami tops (<£4) are really light and comfortable although I do feel the need to wear a strapless bra underneath rather than having straps showing. I loved the colours of the tropical top (~£4) although its a bit see through. As you can see, I've been suffering a bit of an addiction to the printed shorts. These are loose and pyjama-like which is perfect for the warm weather and paired with one of the cami tops they make a cute, lightweight outfit. Finally, the denim shorts £10 are a really good fit and are similar to ones for treble the price in Topshop. Also worth mentioning, but not photographed, is my new silicon mint phone case which I got for only £1. Considering the difficulty I've faced trying to get a reasonable priced cover- I thought I'd share. Despite Primark's affordable prices, my bank account is still crying itself to sleep at night after all this. The same cannot be said for me though- I'm so excited to wear it.

My Summer In Pictures

In line with my 'end of summer' themed posts, today I'm going to share a few (or 21) snaps from over the summer! Apologies for some of them being bad quality as they were taken on my phone. I know 'summer', the season, doesn't technically end till well into September (yeah later than I thought too!) but to me summer = time off school. Maybe that's why it seems so short compared to other seasons.

 This was in Edinburgh very soon after my exams- the holidays hadn't started but in my mind they had! I stumbled upon this gorgeous shabby chic bathroom in Jenners and I literally wanted it all. I always worry that when I get a flat/ house there will be no variety of decor at all because I only like one style- shabby chic. 

At the beginning of June we had some amazingly sunny days! I loved wearing my £1 Primark wayfarer sunglasses!

This was the day I sat in my garden in the sun for about an hour and made a daisy chain. I took an alternative approach to it though and used a kirbie instead of my nail to make holes in the stems. It actually worked really well! Sadly the daisys began to wither within a few hours but I managed to preserve them by pressing them!

Despite my short, horrible looking nails- I love this picture! Its soo summery and cute.

Remember I had "Use fake tan" on my summer bucket list? Well I used it. And then some. I went for the dark St. Moriz because I usually need at least 4 coats of the medium for it to make the slightest difference. Fair to say my friends were a little taken aback when I came out this colour as apposed to my usual milk bottle white. It was pretty severe at first but after a couple of rinses it was really really nice!

This pretty much sums up how I spent my time before Africa. Eat, TV, eat, TV. It was fab!

This is just some of the piles and piles of stuff I needed for Africa. I think I actually used about 1/10 of the stuff I brought!

I had a superb birthday this year. It was a really quiet, family celebration and was perfect.

Yes. This is what happens when I'm bored and get my hands on my elf palette.

I had this in a fancy ice cream place having a catch up with friends. It was, as you can probably imagine, amazing.

I look a bit scary here haha! I had a fight with my enormous mosquito net. I won. Muaha.

My backpack was literally like carrying another person- I didn't know if I was going to tip backwards or forwards.

This was on Safari. I don't even need to caption this- its just so spectacular that it speaks for itself.

I have been loving these lately! I just finished my tub of body butter and the perfume has been my go-to everyday. The scent is soo yummy!

I'm actually so proud of my photography skills here! I have been keeping this for special occasions only and absolutely love it. I will be so gutted to finish it. Although- my mum was so kind and bought me Eau So Fresh which I cannot wait to try!

I think this is the best I have done my eye makeup ever! I was so proud of myself but haven't quite been able to recreate it. I'll need to keep working on it. 

I cannot describe how amazing the feeling of getting rid of old school stuff is. I literally filled the recycling bin! I was so pleased when my results came in and one of the first things I did was clear out all the stuff I won't be needing this year.

I have fallen in love with Costa this summer (despite the fact I don't actually like coffee!). My favourite drink is the Red Berry Fruit Cooler but I've tried the Belgian Chocolate and Raspberry and White Chocolate Creamy Coolers too. Yum!

My family and I took a little trip to Blackpool before the schools went back. Its kind of a family tradition and we always stay in the same hotel (which is lovely!). These arcades are so fun but seriously addictive.

While we were in Blackpool, there were shows by the Red Arrows! They were amazing but soo noisy!

So that's been my summer! I know I've said time and time again how quickly it has went but it really has whizzed by. I'm glad to say though that I done a lot and enjoyed every day!

The Summer Bucket List- Review

New obsession alert: LISTS. 
Hey Everyone!
I have always been a sucker for a to do list- especially at school or when I'm really busy. Recently though, I've taken list making to a whole new level and filled a book with different lists (I may do a post on that if anyone is interested?) as well as writing bucket lists. One was the traditional kind: things I want to do in my lifetime and the others were mini ones of things I want to do per season. I then saw this post on The Trendy Chic which really inspired me to blog about the lists I had written. I thought sharing this this would be a fun way to let you know what I've been up to over the past few months and maybe inspire you to do your own. I want to make this a feature on Julz' Obsessions: at the start of a season I will post what I want to achieve and at the end I will let you know how I got on!

As you know, I did indeed spend 2 weeks in Africa and it was the most amazing experience. When I got back, I had a major declutter of my room and sold some old stuff on ebay and the rest will be sold at the next boot sale I do. I also went thrift shopping and actually found brand new things donated from H&M (does that defeat the purpose?). I made two Starburst wrapper bracelets: one for my blogger friend Melanie and one for me which I posted about here. I certainly watched a lot of TV and YT before Africa: I watched all of Miranda, caught up on Pretty Little Liars, watched Geordie Shore from the beginning, Friends and Sex and the City. I went on the trampoline (only twice though) and done DIY projects such as the bunting featured here. I completely fell in love with MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Soft & Gentle (full review coming soon!) and decided to walk to complete a few errands rather than taking the bus. I used the personalised storage box I created here for my new memory box and had many days out. I didn't have the traditional picnic in a park but my family and I had one on the train down to Blackpool so I think that still counts. Blowing bubbles was a bit of a random goal but it is something really summery and I done it in Africa visiting the primary schools (the kids went crazy for them!) I didn't read the books I intended to (that would help my advanced english course this year) but I did read Cheryl Cole and Gok Wan's autobiographies: both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Finally, I did put on fake tan- in fact it was pretty much as soon as I came out of my final exam! I was pretttyy dark (to say the least) but when it washed off a bit I liked it!

As for those I didn't manage: so far, I haven't found a job- though it certainly isn't through lack of trying! I also didn't relax as much as I wanted but I'm actually glad because I feel sooo unproductive doing nothing. I haven't bought a hula hoop yet- but its still on the agenda! I just need to wait till I'm passing ASDA in the car as I'm not up for walking or getting the bus home with one haha. I also failed to get back into the blogging routine- sorry about that! I'm going to try and post regularly again as I go back to school and autumn arrives.

Overall I think I did really well in completing the goals I wanted to and can only hope I will be as successful in autumn.

The Last of Summer OOTD

Hey Everyone!

I haven't posted an OOTD in ages which is weird because I have now figured out a way of taking the picture that doesn't involve boxes and pillows and chairs and drawers stacked on top of each other. Since summer is drawing to a close *sniff* I thought I'd share this rather summery outfit that I wore yesterday. Just as always my luck, I actually missed most of the good (!) Scottish weather while I was in Africa and haven't saw a lot of sun since I've been back but I've just adapted by replacing shorts for light coloured jeans etc.

I got this top in the H&M sale at the beginning of the summer for about £4 which I thought was great. I'm not usually a fan of tops with pictures but I absolutely love the colours of this one. I had also been looking for a cold-shoulder top for ages so was very impressed that something so on trend was in the sale. Its really baggy which I like and is longer at the back so can be worn with leggings/ jeggings too.

These jeans were a present for my birthday and I really like them! All my jeans are dark blue so its lovely to have a change (especially for summer when the weather isn't great) and they are also very comfortable. 

This is also the first time my new MAC lipstick has made an appearance (even though you can only just about make it out!) and I love love love it. But a full review will be coming soon!

200th Post & FOTD

Hey Everyone!

I'm back! For those of you who don't know- I was in Africa for just over two weeks and it was amazing. I feel like I have been away for ages though and I'm totally out of the loop. 

But I have returned to quite an important milestone- my 200th post! Fist pump fist pump :) I'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has commented and tweeted and supported me!
